Love this!! At first I was like she has a corset...but what's it made out of...bombs! Very clever and edgy! And I'm envious of all your studio space!! I have a corner right now...although I do end up taking the whole living space on occasion:)
Thanks for posting pics of your studio. I love seeing the spaces other artists work in. I'm makes me feel okay about my own less than organized studio to remember that it's supposed to be a functional area.
She's fabulous. I think one thing I really appreciate about your work is that each character is just that, a character, has character, and a personality of sorts. Each piece is not just a mere superficial visual presentation. I have seen some doll artwork that is just a mere visual presentation, and the doll itself has no depth of character, no meaning. But your work certainly does, and I think that is precisely what drew me in. For me, visual presentations that lack depth, and do not cause the veiwer to think, are not art at all, but pure visual masturbation. I would much rather enjoy some mental stimulation. I like the interesting and attentive details that portray something beyond what we are simply seeing, particularly those that at first seem out of place, but when pondered over, allow one a look into that deeper character. Like the bombs on this doll. And her hat that seems it might be a nurse's hat--I loved the fact that in response to the question whether she is nurse, you did not say yes or no, but just that you "suppose"--and the fur collar, the ruffles. All taken together, they don't seem to make sense; precisely why one is forced to looked beyond for the deeper meaning.
thanks a lot. if i tried to explain what i was thinking while doing this it would make even less sense. some things in this doll are literal, others are just used to visually balance it all out. when oe thing doesn't work i just keep adding and taking away until i feel it fits visually. any depth that shows is not from anything i do other than show up and let it come out. i don't spew long explanations of my work and i don't even like talking about it actually- funny -then why show my work in live journal? maybe i am lazy but i would rather have people come up with their own interpretations of what i put out.
That is really funny! Perfect for the Bombshell theme. Someone else mentioned that they were perplexed why she was wearing a nurse's hat - but it made me think of the plus charge on a battery.
I always wondered how you photographed those dolls.
oh yeah that was what i was thinking. haha i was first going to put a jihad symbol on her hat but it didn't look right. th + its just a design plain and simple. i photograph them several ways but i always use those lights.
very cool... shes a beauty! may i ask what kind of light bulbs do you use? The bulbs that the workers at the photo store keep recommending to me turn my work orange. I even have the diffusion material on my lights as well. Looks like you have great natural lighting in your studio as well. All your photographs always turn out perfect.
How timely and surreal to have your "Bomb Shell" appear this week in particular. You are really tapping into some deep places my friend. I thoroughly understand the lack of necessity for words. You work speaks volumes all on it's own.
Hey, Just added you to my friends list, hope you don't mind. I really dig your work. I read an article on you in "Art doll quarterly" (Great magazine) and it mentioned you had a livejournal. I have a lot of respect for the creation of art dolls, and it is an artistic medium that I would like to explore as well.
